What is NAC?

| The National Accreditation Council for Agencies Serving People with Blindness or Visual Impairment is the standard setting and accrediting body that works with agencies and schools providing services and programs to people who are blind. NAC is a voluntary, not-for-profit corporation created in 1966 by those it serves. |

What is NAC^s Mission?

To develop standards which promote effective, sound, and publicly accountable programs of service which help visually disabled children and adults achieve their full potential,

To ensure, through the accreditation process, that the standards are being met by programs of service which seek accreditation, and

To give public recognition to those agencies and schools which operate in compliance with the standards for accreditation.

What is Accreditation?

|
Accreditation is fundamentally a system of voluntary self-regulation, based on the philosophy that the accrediting process is a constructive experience which produces improved quality and effectiveness of service through the use of realistic, objective standards against which an organization can measure its own performance.

What are Standards and the Benefits of Accreditation?

| |
| Standards are yardsticks by which an organization or program can measure its performance and outcomes. Agencies, schools and programs that use accreditation to strive toward excellence derive value-added benefits such as: |

being able to measure service outcomes as a result of working toward accreditation, the public recognition that accreditation conveys,
|
| |
|
|
|
bringing together trustees, staff, and consumers to identify strengths and weaknesses as well as setting objectives for the organization, and

providing an ongoing management tool for strategic planning and measuring outcomes.
